“Can you remember the last time you felt truly Hungarian?”
In recent years, the issue of Hungarian identity and the concept of being Hungarian has moved into the arena of political parties. We believe that being Hungarian or feeling Hungarian is not a question of political right or left. What makes you feel truly Hungarian? For us, being Hungarian means value and a sense of belonging, and we believe it is important that everyone should be free to embrace it and be proud of it, regardless of party politics.
The mission
What does it mean to be Hungarian? It was Gergely Kovács Kolnai, the spokesman of noÁr who first suggested that we should address the issue of national identity.
Within noÁr, the topic was first raised more seriously on 23 October, in connection with the tradition of wearing the red, white and green cockade. We decided to investigate and research this subject, and this inspired our new song, ‘Being Hungarian’ for the National day of 15 March.
Hungarian Identity became our mission because party politics began to use Hungarian traditions, Hungarian memorial days, and our cultural universal cultural symbols as tools exclusively to serve their own agenda. It is in our common interest to preserve the true meaning of our words, our concepts and our retain national values in order to feel free to be part of the Hungarian society.
Working with Izsák Farkas was a great experience;he contributed to the mission not just by creating the base of the song, but also played an incredible role in fine-tuning the issue of Hungarian identity itself. He is also undoubtedly a great expert when it comes to one of the foundations of Hungarian culture: our folk music, together with Freddie S. They complemented each other incredibly well while writing the base of the song.
